Ditch regular paints for interesting patterns!

Choosing the right wallpaper is an integral part of an interior design project. Wallpapers are widely used in the West around the whole house. However, in India, wallpaper is used mostly as an accent wall. With so many options available in the market, selecting wallpapers is both an easy and difficult task. In this blog, we are going to create a small guide on how you can choose wallpapers for your project –

1. Understand the type of Design –

Decide on an interior style

This is the most important step as it can make or break the whole look of your client’s house. Make sure to figure out the style you are aiming for the house. It could be minimal, classic, rustic, boho, or even traditional. Based on your style and décor you can choose the type of wallpaper design you want. Next, you will need to decide whether you will use a large pattern or small patterned wallpaper based on the interior of the house. Wallpapers must blend well with interiors and merge into the house rather than being loud and standing out.

2. Material –

Choose from different types of materials

In India, we have majorly 6 different types of materials that are used to make wallpapers. They are paper, paper-backed vinyl, non-woven, solid vinyl, PVC, and fabric. Paper-based wallpaper is the cheapest option if your client is under a budget. Paper-backed vinyl is more durable and stronger than paper wallpaper because of its vinyl coating. Non-woven wallpapers are expensive due to the synthetic materials used to make them but give a very expensive feel. Solid vinyl wallpaper is durable as a solid sheet of vinyl is put over the vinyl. Pvc wallpaper is also a good budget option but the quality is not great. Lastly, fabric wallpaper will usually come with a vinyl coating and give a good seamless finish.

3. Coverage –

Install wallpaper to hide imperfections

Wallpapers are an excellent option for hiding any flaws present on the wall. You can use wallpapers with 3d textures to add more depth and character to the space. Make sure of doing a thorough inspection of the walls before you apply the wallpaper so that you can camouflage all the imperfections.

4. Colors –

The right colour of wallpaper can elevate your interiors

Choosing the right color will elevate the overall interiors of the house. A warm shaded wallpaper like red, yellow, and orange can brighten a usually dark room. For more minimal vibes, shades like white, cream, and beige will add a more modern feel to the house. For classical interiors, wallpapers with bold patterns will add a royal touch to the house. The climate of the region where the house is located also plays an important role in selecting the color of the wallpaper. For colder climates, warm-toned shades will brighten and liven the space. For a warmer climate, cooler-toned shades will bring in comfort for the house.

5. Measuring the amount of wallpaper you will need –

Careful take measurements so as to not waste wallpaper

Firstly, measure the wall both horizontal and vertically and then multiply the vertical and horizontal dimensions. Do the same for the other walls and take the total. In the case of wallpaper for the ceiling, just multiply the floor’s width and length. Finally, divide your total by 25. To subtract the openings like door and window, just minus one and a half. This calculation may sound tricky but with practice, you will ace it!

6. Visualize before Finalizing –

Think hard before deciding on a pattern

When you are making your wallpaper purchase online or just by looking at sample pieces, it is very tricky to understand how it will look all over the room. Make sure to understand the scale of the room where you will be installing the wallpaper and then decide the type of print you want. Bold and colorful designs that have closely placed patterns will end up looking like a huge stain on the wall. Always give the pattern more preference over the color. Go for muted colors with wide-set patterns. This will help your wallpaper not upstage your interiors.

Conclusion –

Though wallpaper sounds like the easiest part of the whole interior design process, it also can be the one step that can ruin the whole look if the wrong wallpaper is chosen. This is just because of the scale of the room and as the walls are present throughout the house, it is highly likely to be the most noticed part of the house. Wallpaper can change the atmosphere of the room and liven the décor. It is very interesting to play around with colors, patterns, shapes, and sizes. While the paint is the most commonly used wall covering, wallpaper is a new fast-moving trend. So, it’s time to ditch the old painting methods and choose the modern wallpaper application!
